Police Suspend Arrest of KPK Leaders
VIVAnews – Bibit Samad Riyanto and Chandra Hamzah, the non-active leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had been detained by the police on Thursday, October 29. According to Deputy Head of Indonesian Police Crime and Investigation Agency Insp. Gen. Dikdik Maulana, the police had reasons to arrest Bibit and Chandra.
The objective reason is, “the suspects are subjected to more than five years imprisonment,” Dikdik said at the police headquarters on Jalan Trunojoyo, Jakarta on Thursday, October 29.
Later on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the police decided to suspend Bibit and Chandra’s detention. Bibit said that he was both touched by the present situation. He expressed his empathy through presidential advisor on legal affairs Denny Indrayana, stating that Indonesia is suffering because of the corruptors.
“Indonesian people suffer great loss, while the corruptors take profit,” said Indrayana quoting Bibit.
Bibit expects that the fact finding team established by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono which is led by Adnan Buyung Nasution would be able to work to the fullest in order to uphold the law in the country.
Bibit stated that he would discuss his next step after the suspension with his legal law and KPK.
Chandra stated his gratitude of the suspension. He responded with a smile when asked about a rumor of a murder threat on him.
Bibit and Chandra were named suspects in the authority misuse and extortion cases. Both are charged with Article 12e of Corruption Eradication Law.
