British PM Praises Indonesia's Commitment

VIVAnews - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown praised Indonesia for making a design to reduce carbon emission by 26 percent in 2009. The measure was considered positive in an attempt to deal with climate change.

"It was in line with the promises made by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono," said presidential spokesperson Dino Patti Djalal in a press conference on Thursday, Oct 29.

During a telephone call with the Indonesian president, Mr Brown also honored the practices of democracy in Indonesia. He also congratulated Mr Yudhoyono for being elected President for the second term of office.

However, the targeted reduction of 26 percent should be followed by other countries. "41 percent is still possible. It depends on other countries as well because no global commitment is ready," he said.

The targeted emission reduction was brought forth by President Yudhoyono during the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh, US. He said Indonesia set the targeted reduction of green house gas emission for short-, medium- and long-term period between 2020 and 2050.
