Indonesia Exports Soar in ASEAN Free Market

VIVAnews - Indonesia's export performance in the ASEAN market is seen significantly rising in the free trade agreement framework between ASEAN countries and its partnering countries. The Trade Department reported a US$126.7 million raise in non-oil and gas export in a month.

Based on May 2009 data, the non-oil and gas exports to all ASEAN countries reached US$1.7 billion. Meanwhile, the June 2009 exports rose to US$1.8 billion.

"There is a 7.44 percent raise in the first semester in 2009 compared to the same period in 2008," said Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, Aug. 10. In the first semester of 2009, the non-oil and gas exports reached US$9.1 billion.

According to Pangestu, the export destination countries in ASEAN if compared to other countries have the lowest export decrease along the first six months in 2009. "The European Union still has a negative export growth," she added.
