Philippine Bombing

Philippines Suspects Link of RI Terrorist

VIVAnews - An assembled bomb attached to a motorbike had exploded in Jolo Island, South Philippines on Tuesday, July 7. The bomb, which exploded across a Roman Catholic Church, killed at least six people and injured 40 people.

The Philippines police suspect the Jamaah Islamiyah group, which is based in Indonesia, was involved in the incident.

On a radio interview, Philippines National Security Advisor, Norbeto Gonzales said although the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) was not responsible for the bombing, the members might be individually involved.

“We’re seeing the involvement of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), which is related to Abu Sayaf,” Gonzales said as quoted from GMANews.TV on Thursday, July 9.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of Philippines Anti-terrorism Agency, Ricardi Blancaflor, said it was unusual for Jamaah Islamiyah to be involved in a bombing.

“JI has a lot of things to do here [Mindanao] such as trainings,” he said.

Blancaflor also said it was estimated that there were still 12 JI members who were hiding in South Philippines. Currently his team is still searching for two members, Umar Patek and Dulmatim, who are JI’s senior figures.

Earlier, the bombing expert unit found a bomb at the Mount Carmel Church. The police also found a suspicious package in a store near the church. The attack took place two days after the bombing outside a cathedral in Cotabato, Mindanao. Five people killed in the attack.

Jolo is the basis of a separatist group which is related to Jamaah Islamiyah. The organization is suspected to be a part of Al-Qaida. Nobody has confessed about their involvement in the bombing.

A similar attack occurred in Iligan city, Mindanao two hours after the Jolo Bombing. A bomb, which was left in a car, blasted near the military vehicles. Seven people, including two soldiers, were harmed. The police have not found any relation between the two incidents.
