Indonesia Bans Australia's 'Balibo Five'

VIVAnews - Indonesia's censorship board, the LSF, banned the screening of Australian movie 'Balibo Five' one hour prior to the film's premiere in the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club in a movie theater in Jakarta.

As a result, the movie will be delisted from the annual film festival Jakarta International Film Festival (JiFFest) which will take place between 4 and 12 December 2009.

JiFFest festival manager Nauval Yazid said the LSF has verbally indicated about the ban and promised to deliver a written notice before the festival commences. "They've asked us not to play the movie," he told VIVAnews on Wednesday, Dec 2.

In the verbal communication, the LSF did not utter the arguments on the ban in detail. The LSF was only concerned that the screening would hamper the diplomatic relations between Indonesia, Timor Leste and Australia. "We're expecting the written ground within the next one to two days," Nauval said.

Directed by Australian director Rob Connolly, the movie depicts the killing of five newsmen in Balibo, a border area of Timor Leste, occurred in 1975.

The five journalists of Australia, New Zealand and England were Greg Shackleton, Brian Peters, Malcolm Rennie, Gary Cunningham and Tony Steward. All of them died during a gunfight involving the Indonesian troops and East Timor pro-independence force.

The Indonesian government emphasized that they were not deliberately shot in the war zone. However, the Australian coronary court of New South Wales decided that, based on thorough investigation, the journalist were murdered by the Indonesian troops.
