VIVAnews – As many as 70,000 structures have been built along the banks of Ciliwung River, starting from Tanjung Barat until Manggarai floodgate.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has yet to confirm about any action as an attempt to solve the problem.
“Ciliwung's structuring must be integrated with the social, economic and political issues. We cannot restructure it by only eliminating the slum area,” Bowo said in Jakarta on Friday, Nov. 20.
People who build houses along the banks are generally those having low income.
The Jakarta administration is pessimistic that the people would be able to pay the rent if they to are relocated to apartments.
“If they are moved to apartments, they will not be able to pay the rent. We need to think about their ability for paying apartments and education, which will be subsidized by the government,” Bowo added.
The structures along the Ciliwung banks are seen as one of the triggers of Jakarta flood. The people who live in these structures will most likely litter at the river.
The garbage will then create a sedimentation which leads to the narrowing river banks. Moreover, the fund to finance the dredging of Ciliwung River is still depending on loans from the World Bank.
